Camels search for untainted shrubs and water in the burning oil fields of southern Kuwait.Ahmadi Oil Fields, Kuwait | Steve McCurry | 1991In 1991 Iraqi troops fleeing the advance of coalition military forces ignited oil fields in southern Kuwait. Steve McCurry captured the black smoke, terror, and devastation that followed. He recalls this image of camels and smoke as demonstrating “the environmental impact, not so much of the war but the aftermath.”McCurry says, “All the oil fields were on fire. That was an absolutely unreal experience. It was as thought you were on another planet, or a movie set, or witnessing the end of the world. Some 600 oil wells were burning, and at 11 a.m. it was like like night. Animals were wandering around lost; there were dead Iraqi soldiers lying everything.
